Vertigo published Ronald Wimberly’s Prince of Cats last week, an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet through the eyes of Tybalt, set in 80s graffiti culture New York. It’s gorgeously illustrated, depicting katana duels and sincere, intimate “summer of our youth” moments with equal skill. Its dialogue is a clever and ceaselessly fun mashup of Shakespeare’s original text with a casual “aw shit girl” street cadence. All these elements combine perfectly, and go down real smooth. Definitely one of my favorite books of the year, I can’t recommend it enough.
Above is a silent scene where Arzach makes an appearance at a local block party. You can see more pages in this preview over at Flavor Wire, too.
Hey Everybody, Prince of Cats is out today! Yataze, dun dun!
Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or how about you go out, get some sunshine, visit your local vendor and cop one if that’s your bag. I’m sure there’s a way to get it online via DC comics app too if you can figure that out (if you can, let me know will ya)
